Why Your Business Should Have A Carbon Reduction Strategy
With recent shifts in public perceptions and the creation of government targets, the need for us to become carbon neutral by 2050 and reduce our footprints has never been greater.
I n t r o d u c t i o n
We believe that every business should have a carbon reduction strategy in place. Committing to reducing our carbon emissions sooner rather than later is the only way to ensure the survival of our planet.
Now is the best time to begin your carbon reduction process
On 1st November 2021, we will see the the largest international conference that the UK will have even hosted. This is COP 26, the United Nations Climate Change Conference. We can all anticipate the publicity, the enthusiasm and the sheer noise that such a conference will generate, particularly from politicians looking to demonstrate the UK’s place in the new world order.
What business owners also need to appreciate is the emphasis that will be placed on all of us, as individuals and as employees to demonstrate our own commitments to sharing this planet and reducing our carbon footprints. Are you ready to answer the questions “What have you done to help save your planet? What has been your contribution?”
If you are worried about your energy bills, if you think that negative publicity around your carbon reduction commitment could be damaging, or if you think that your customers may want to work with a supply chain that is in line with public opinion on carbon then we suggest that you give us a call to see what can be done to support you and your business. Please do this soon as time is running out.
The War on Carbon
As a renewable energy company, we aim to help others to reduce their carbon emission whether that be in the form of installing solar PV, EV chargers or battery storage. In order to lead by example and understand the damage carbon emissions is having on our planet, we have set out to reduce our own emissions, and work with our supply chain to do this.
In the words of our Chairman, Mark Wakeford, ‘we must declare a war on carbon, for the sake of our children and our future way of life.’ Therefore, it is important that companies come together to take serious action on measuring and reducing carbon footprints.
Carbon Footprint Verified
In order to combat climate change and reduce the carbon costs of our installations, we have continued to improve efficiencies in our business through rigorous measuring and target setting.
EvoEnergy are delighted to have received an industry standard certification from Carbon Footprint. We are now a Carbon Footprint – CO²e assessed company. In order to measure this, we were assessed to an industry standard certification by CarbonFootprint. To complete this assessment, we measured our business’s operations on a multitude of different activities including our office operating expenses, flights, fuel usage and other sources of carbon.
This has helped us to understand the level of our current emissions and has allowed us to set new targets for the future to not only reduce our direct carbon emissions, but also lower the impact of our wider operations. Ultimately, this verification highlights our carbon footprint measuring is to a high industry standard and provides us with recommendations on how to continue to reduce our emissions.
Our Company Footprint
Our assessment covers the period April 2019 – March 2020, this ensures that our results are comparable to the previous years. The outcome of this assessment has measured our carbon emissions at 48.63 metric tons of CO²e which is 1.95 metric tons per employee.
This is an increase of 6.36 metric tons overall from last year which we investigated and attributed to increased electricity usage due to air conditioning and additional staff but our total emissions per employee has dropped by 0.02 metric tons per employee. We are very aware that we need to practice what we preach which is why we are keen to measure and monitor our own carbon and this process helps narrow our focus.
In order to combat this, we surveyed our staff on their planned frequency of office visits over the next year due to Covid-19. The results of this study showed that we’re due to see a reduction of 53% in office visits, which is a decrease of over 47,000 miles spent travelling to the office over the next year – saving 9.83 metric tons of CO₂e. This will significantly decrease the impact on our environment as less carbon emissions are being expelled into the atmosphere. This will help to move the country in line with the government’s net zero target by 2050.
As a company, measuring our carbon footprint allows us to understand the impact of our business activities. However, without taking action to offset these emissions and reduce them, we won’t see much change. That’s why we’ve decided to participate in the planting of 49 trees across the East Midlands to offset all this carbon through an offsetting programme approved by CarbonFootprint. Employee Personal Carbon Footprint
At EvoEnergy we are driving a change in behaviour within our staff and as a business as a whole. Employees at EvoEnergy are all aware and motivated to reduce their carbon footprint. Using the CarbonFootprint calculator employees calculated their footprints, including emissions from their house, flights, food consumption, personal goods purchased and miles travelled (including business miles). See left for individuals carbon footprints.
Project and O&M Monitoring
We are aware there are a number of reasons our clients approach us, whether to lower their energy bill expenditure or to reduce their reliance on the grid. However, a major factor as to why all clients approach us is to help them reduce their carbon emissions.
Therefore, in order to help clients on this journey, we provide industry leading carbon reporting with every completed project. As a result of this, we are able to pass over the install knowing the embodied carbon emission per install. We aim to offer not only competitive pricing, but also low carbon footprints to our clients.
For O&M clients we can provide accurate information on carbon emissions based on the individual and bespoke service provided.
Ultimately, it’s down to us all to make the change towards sustainability in order to create a greener future. Now is a good time to assess your net zero aspirations and talk to us about how we can help achieve them. Our team of renewable energy experts are available to provide Net Zero consultancy and deliver renewable technologies alongside supporting and maintaining existing renewable assets.
Have you ever wondered; “how much energy could I generate with solar panels on my roof?”.
With our solar PV carbon offset calculator tool, you can find that out. Just by simply entering your roof size, you will receive your system size, energy output and potential money saved in the first year (estimated results).
This will give you an idea of what your carbon savings could be from installing solar panels on your roof. Give it a go today.
