Commercial EV charging station

How much does it cost to install a commercial EV charging station in the UK?

The cost of installing a commercial EV charging station in the UK can vary greatly depending on several factors, such as the type of chargers, the location, and the required infrastructure.

Overall, a commercial EV charging station can cost anywhere upwards of £2m depending on the project size

Are commercial EV charging stations profitable?

Commercial EV charging stations can be profitable, but the profitability of a station depends on several factors, such as the location, the number of users, and the pricing strategy.

Commercial EV charging stations can generate revenue through charging fees or exporting energy to the national grid if a solar & battery combination is used

Do you need planning permission to install an electric charging point?

For commercial or public charging stations, planning permission may be required depending on the location and the type of installation.

In most cases, you will need to apply for planning permission if the installation involves making a significant change to the building or the surrounding area. This could include installing a new electrical substation or making changes to the building’s facade.

Bespoke Charging Points for Your Business

Bespoke Charging Points for Your Business

We’ve installed many EV charging systems for businesses over the years, and we always help our clients to achieve their business energy goals using the most cost-efficient technology. There are three main options open to you when selecting the specifications for your company’s new EV charging stations:

  • Standard (3kW power with an 8-14 hour average charging time)
  • Fast (7-22kW power with 4-6 hour average charging time)
  • Rapid (50kW power with 30 minutes average charging time)
  • Ultra-Rapid (100-200 kW with 10-20 minutes average charging time)

Standard Electric Car Charging Points for Business

Standard Electric Car Charging Points for Business

Standard charging points rated at 3 kW. Charging your EV at this rate will take around eight to 14 hours, depending on mileage range and storage capacity in kWh.

Slow electric car charging points rated at 3 kW are mainly installed on domestic properties or in businesses where EVs are plugged in for a full working day. At 3 kW, these EV charge points add very little to the electrical load of the property or business, akin to a kettle being switched on. Often your electrical infrastructure will not need major upgrades to facilitate the installation of them.

Adding an EV charging points onto any electrical distribution system needs an electrical design and load assessment, as you may not have the capacity on-site to install multiple EV points without an electrical upgrade.

We offer a full design and installation service, including civils work where required, to meet your business’ needs. Providing electric charging points for your visitors and staff can provide real value, boosting your brand image whilst also supplementing your CSR efforts. Fast Electric Car Charging Stations

Fast Electric Car Charging Stations

Fast charging points rated between 7-22 kW. Charging your EV at this rate takes around four to six hours depending on mileage range and storage capacity in kWh – if you’re unsure whether this will be sufficient for your company’s EV fleet, we can guide you through the selection process during our initial consultation.

Fast electric car charging points are normally the highest possible option for standard domestic properties, businesses or dedicated charging stations for car parks, particularly where the dwell time is around the four- to six-hour mark.

These are the most popular due to their fast charge capacity, meaning staff and visitors can quickly charge their cars whilst in a meeting or parked at a shopping centre. This type of charger has increased in demand over the past few recent years, as the improved standard and energy capacity of EV technology facilitated this jump in charging point power without damaging the battery over the long term.

Rapid EV Charging Points for Business

Rapid EV Charging Points for Business

Rapid charging points rated at 50 kW. Charging your EV at this rate takes around 30-60 minutes, depending on mileage range and storage capacity in kWh.

These are often installed on motorway service stations or EV charging forecourts. They are occasionally installed in businesses where the dwell time for an EV is short and when staff and visitors come and go regularly and need a boost charge to get them on their way, which makes them ideal for typical short-stop locations.

They can provide a solution to drivers looking for quick charge, whilst tackling the misnomer that EV charging requires an impractical extensive amount of time.

Rapid chargers put large additional electrical loads onto your electrical infrastructure, so you have to do a full load assessment prior to connecting at this capacity. If any infrastructural changes are required, rest assured that our team of specialists has the experience and expertise to design a system that meets your needs.

Ultra-Rapid Electric Car Charging Stations

Ultra-Rapid Electric Car Charging Stations

Ultra-rapid charging points rated at 100-200 kW. Charging your EV at this rate takes around 10 to 20 minutes depending on mileage range and storage capacity in kWh.

These are often installed on motorway service stations or EV charging forecourts, ideal for locations with drivers that arrive with the intention of only stopping for a short while.

Ultra-rapid aims to benchmark its charging cycle against the time taken to fill a standard petrol or diesel car petrol tank. Ultra-rapid chargers almost certainly need dedicated electrical infrastructure to install and connect. They often need their own dedicated transformer and LV switchboard to allow connection to the national grid or business at MV/HV.

Please note that adding ultra-rapid EV charging points to any businesses’ electrical distribution system needs an electrical design and load assessment as you may not have the capacity to install multiple EV points without an electrical upgrade.
