Silverburn Shopping Centre

Silverburn is a 1,500,000 square foot shopping centre, home to 95 stores & 14 restaurants featuring some of the UK’s most loved brands.

Silverburn is a Hammerson- operated shopping centre, built in 2007 it is an “out of town” shopping centre which is set in a stunning under-cover, architecturally inspired space. In order to reach their sustainability goals of being a net positive carbon company by 2030, Hammerson identified that one way of meeting this goal was a large solar array atop the centre. They went out to competitive tender to install rooftop solar in which EvoEnergy were the company of choice to install the solar panel system.

The initial tender was won as an 850 kWp system, however following conversations with the DNO, it was realised that the grid was unable to support this amount. The initial offer was that the grid would only support a 50 kWp PV system, however EvoEnergy negotiated in conjunction with WSP and persuaded Scottish Power that a 250 kWp system was possible.

The 250 kWp was installed on a flat roof with a ballasted system at a 10 degrees angle. The project was completed to the agreed time frames. The main challenge for the installation was carrying out the installation on an operating shopping centre, EvoEnergy had to ensure there was no disruption to visitors and staff which EvoEnergy completed successfully. The project was completed over three weeks and was delivered ahead of schedule.

EvoEnergy continue to monitor and maintain the system through an O&M package.
