Solar PV Farms

Solar farms take photovoltaic (PV) power to a larger scale. They compromise of huge arrays of PV panels, generating electricity directly for the grid. The scale of these investments have grown in recent years with the current largest being Olmedilla Photovoltaic Farm in Olmedilla de Alarcón, Spain. This installation uses more than 160,000 panels to produce a peak power output of 60 MW – enough for 40,000 homes. Solar farms occupy large areas of land but are increasingly integrated with agriculture to provide dual use of the available area. Spain and Germany currently lead the way in solar farms; however, the USA is in the process of constructing the biggest solar farm in the world – 600MW at Rancho Cielo Solar Farm.

Solar Farms in the UK

Solar farms and concentrating solar energy plants provide emission-free power, with low ongoing running costs and consequently may form an important component of our future energy mix. With the introduction of Feed In Tariffs, the prospect of solar farms in the UK has moved a step closer. A proposed payment of 26p per KWh for systems up to 5MW could yield returns of in excess of 8% per year. The drawback of such facilities is, however, the large amount of land required and the consequent negative visual impact on the landscape. This has been highlighted recently in Germany where Prince Albert of Thurn and Taxis has run in to stiff opposition to his plans to convert huge tracts of land from traditional agriculture to solar farms. Critics cite the scale of the plans as their main objection; it covers an area 190 hectares.

Sheffield Solar Farm

In August 2010, Nick Clegg officially opened the EvoEnergy installed Sheffield Solar Farm. This was a landmark project in terms of panel efficiency research. To find out further information about Solar Farms or how EvoEnergy can help you in this area, contact us today!

Public Sector

Installing Solar PV on a public building offers more than reducing energy bills and securing the future energy price, but helps in educating the public and our future generations. EvoEnergy is experienced in installing Solar PV on schools across the UK; however we have also installed on Hospitals and other public buildings.

Installation of a Solar Photovoltaic system in schools is more than about saving money – though they will. It gives a clear visible reminder to children, in the form of the photovoltaic panels and a large display showing real time generation, about the finite nature of conventional energy and its responsible use.

The solar generation figures are also available to be used in both curricula and extra curricula teaching. Previous ideas have included the integration into Maths and ICT in the form of data manipulation or organising ‘green police’ or ‘eco monitors’ to check the culture of energy saving is followed.

Climate change is recognised as a global crisis – Sustainable development is seen as an important strategy in finding a solution to the problem. EvoEnergy strongly believes that our younger generation must play a key role in fighting Climate Change. It is important that they understand our dependence on energy and wish to help them realise a green future.

EvoEnergy work directly with schools and are also involved with the Building Schools for the Future’ (BSF) programme. This includes dynamic relationships with developers, architects, design consultants and M&E contractors to provide innovative and cost effective energy solutions.

Why go Solar?

  • The Government plans to help schools reduce their carbon footprint. There are large grants available at the moment, but there is no guarantee that this will continue indefinitely.
  • Help teach students about the technologies that will be essential to their sustainable future.
  • Promote your school as a green school. This can ensure positive press, but also invigorate staff and pupils.
  • Foster greater community links around the school.
  • Secure a proportion of your energy generation for completely free for decades to come whilst others watch their electricity bills spiral.

How can EvoEnergy help you?

  • EvoEnergy is experienced at identifying funding for solar systems for schools. The main source of funds is through the Low Carbon Building Programme Phase II. This scheme will match funding up to 50% of the entire photovoltaic installation. There are other sources of funding for which your school might be eligible, which can, in some instances, lead to 100% funding, or an entirely free solar system!
  • EvoEnergy are excellent at advising in the writing of funding proposals. We have experience in the team of bidding for large public and private sector contracts, we know the boxes that must be ticked and what the bodies are looking for.
  • EvoEnergy will professionally design your installation, with all bespoke work designed by qualified engineers. Every detail is looked after by specialists.
  • After the design is complete project manage and install your solar system. After we tidy up there is no indication is left of EvoEnergy’s presence except for a fully functioning photovoltaic system.
  • EvoEnergy interacts with the school at all stages of the design and installation process ensuring a satisfied customer who gets exactly what they wanted because EvoEnergy made the effort to listen

As schools generally require large bespoke systems it is easier if you contact us directly and we can talk about your exact needs and how we can best help you.

Large Scale Projects

There are a variety of tax efficient ways for money to be invested into the PV market that have emerged since the launch of the FiT in April 2010.

If you’ve a fund looking for a profitable and ethical means of investing then EvoEnergy can help you. We are capable of technical assistance as well as sourcing potential roof-space for leasing options. Cut out the need for a broker and deal directly with one of the country’s largest and most professional installers. We are interested in funds looking at both domestic and commercial roof space as well as those for investing in large scale ground mounted solutions.

We’re fully aware of the bonds required from institutional investors and use not only MCS accredited panels and inverters, but also those on the ‘bankable list’. We offer various levels of operations and maintenance packages that can be adapted to suit your specific requirements.

Please contact us to talk more on these issues.

Residential Developers

As a Residential Developer you are trying to hit a specific carbon saving in order to give you enough points to hit a specific code. If you’re looking to build a single house then you’d be better of looking at our domestic section of the website, and then talking to one of our domestic engineers.

There is a good chance that you don’t know how much solar is required per household and there is a very good chance that you don’t have an internal resource to help you find out. We offer help to size how big a system needs to be.

As with any competent solar company our engineers are able to help you determine what type of solar panels you should be using, as well as inverter. We can advise on the look of the panel and how these will complement any specific roof type aesthetically. If you need any structural calculations this can be provided for a fee, if you’re doing your own then we can provide the weights and installation details completely free of charge.

If you’re in a hurry then we’re capable of working quickly to advise, but as we hold large stock at any one moment in time we can install at quick notice enabling you to hit your timescales. With such a large installation capacity we’re also capable of installing several houses simultaneously on the same site ensuring that we keep up with however many roofing teams you have thereby minimising your scaffold costs.

Have a delay? Bad weather or unreliable sub-contractors are sadly part of the house-building world. We will pencil in a date, but not penalise you if it needs to move backwards in time, so long as you keep us informed allowing us to juggle our resources and don’t just ring up the day before. You’re our customer and we will be flexible to your demands.

As you’d expect all our in-house installers have CSCS cards, we only use experienced roofers for the roofing element and we’re an NIEEIC approved contractor in our own right.

Architects and Specifiers

Solar Photovoltaic panels are not necessarily every architects dream. If you’re designing a building, and have to hit certain renewable requirements the most cost effective method is often PV, normally placed on the roof.

When initially drawing up plans like these there is a great deal of information that you can find on our benchmarks page. The dimensions and power output of a variety of solar panels can be found here.

If you’re looking for a less cost effective, but more striking building, then the photovoltaic cells can be incorporated into glass to give a striking shadow effect. They can also be incorporated into facades to give an electricity generating feature of a building. Whilst expensive when compared to simple roof mounted systems these can be comparable in cost to traditional facade systems.

If you have specific requirements then contact us. We can be commissioned to create drawings if required, or we can be involved in specific design requirements.
